Entry 1 – A Beautiful Beginning in Buzzing Manchester

English

My arrival in Manchester, where I’ll be working in a hostel called YHA Manchester and visiting the city, was greeted with warm welcomes. It’s not a myth; people in Manchester are genuinely lovely! My roommate, Olivia, turned out to be Australian and extremely sweet. She already knows her way around the city, as she is moving into an apartment in Manchester soon. She was invaluable with her recommendations of activities to do around here.

On Tuesday, I had a phenomenal time enjoying the sunny spring day while reading on my Kindle next to the Bridgewater Canal where four geese were splashing around. I could feel a soothing breeze as my skin was being warmed up by the sun. The best thing in Manchester is the atmosphere, which I could authentically experience during the day as people were strolling around and enjoying the sun, laughing and smiling. It was a gorgeous day. I was surrounded by Manchester’s industrial-looking buildings with their red bricks, their warehouse-looking architecture and small boats, which were floating in the tiny canal.

On Thursday, Olivia showed me around the city. We walked around the Northern Quarter, and it was crowded with people who were enjoying another sunny day in town. The roads are filled with pubs with substantial terraces, bakeries, and coffee shops. I was surprised to learn that the worker bee was a significant symbol in Manchester as it was everywhere. We took a break at a little hidden bakery, and I got a savoury cinnamon swirl! Finally, we rode a free double-decker bus back to our hostel. I had an astounding week!

Next week, I plan on visiting the Old Trafford Stadium and continuing to discover the city with, maybe, a visit of a hidden garden on an old railway.

See you next week,

Cheerio!
