The last week of my 19th birthday was full of surprises. I explored San Giljan a bit more; I discovered that the Maltese McDonald’s has pastries and a mini lift to take the food to the top floor. Brilliant! Afterwards, I went for brunch at Brunch & Beyond, where I tried a fried chicken waffle with truffle and BBQ sauce, which was both strange and good.

One surprise I didn’t like so much from my host family was my Friday night dinner; they served me blood sausage with quinoa and fried vegetables, and my brain couldn’t process that it could be good.

Saturday was my birthday and I got more love than I thought I would get being so far away from Canada. On the morning of my birthday, my host family knocked on my bedroom door and sang happy birthday to me with a chocolate mousse cake and pink carnations. Unbelievable! Another kindness that morning was that I received flowers and a small stuffed rabbit (which I named Ernis) from my mom to let me know that she was there despite the distance.

Later that day I took the bus to Mdina; the silent city. It has beautiful high walls forming a colorful little labyrinth full of stories. I love this city because it makes you feel as small as if you were in a village of giants. I ended my visit at a little restaurant called Coggi’s where I had a lovely birthday dinner; a glass of white wine with a white pizza (no tomato sauce) topped with cheese, roast potatoes and dried tomatoes. A masterpiece!

On Sunday I did an activity with EF. I visited Marsaxlokk; the fishing village and I was able to see the traditional fishing boats. Then we went to see the magnificent natural landscape of the Blue Grotto; a breathtaking arch and clear blue water.

I don’t know exactly what I want to do next week, perhaps go swimming in St Peter’s pool or visit a vineyard.
