Entry 4: From Hard Goodbyes to an Uplifting New Chapter

English

Sælinú!

My week started on an emotional note. I moved from Sólheimar to Hveragerði and I was not expecting it to be so hard to leave behind people I had only known for three weeks. I felt so grateful for all the amazing moments spent together. I realized that all the best things in life are the simplest: laughing, dancing, human connection, sharing meals and late-night conversations while watching the sunset. The goodbyes were heart-breaking, but the memories engraved in my head made it so worth it.

Over the past few days, I explored my new town and became familiar with the surroundings. I was stunned by the harmony between the dramatic mountain landscapes, the highly active geothermal fields, the modern buildings and the agricultural greenhouses all coexisting together. I also started to volunteer in new greenhouses. In terms of tasks, I mostly did weeding and I harvested cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce and kale. My new roommates and I also cleaned the flower beds of the medical center that is hosting us. I realized that I really enjoy learning about and discovering new things related to environment, horticulture, gardening and plant cultivation.

My week would not have been complete if I had not explored a few of the natural wonders of the land. My highlight was hiking around the Kerið, a bright aquamarine volcanic crater lake that was formed around 3000 to 6500 years ago. I also enjoyed admiring the Sólheimajökull glacier even though it shocked me to observe how much it is being affected by global warming and how it is progressively shrinking.

Next week, I plan to contemplate geysers in the Haukadalur geothermal area, observe the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, and explore the Þingvellir National Park.

Sjáumst!

Entry 5: The Countdown Has Begun

Komdu blessað!  I can’t believe my journey in Iceland is already nearing its end. I started my week by stimulating my creativity while touring the LÁ Art Museum in Hveragerði with Joanne, a warm-hearted American, and Siyi, a wonderfully…
