Entry 1: My Arrival in the Bow Valley- Alex Vaillancourt

English

My first week in Bow Valley (Banff and Canmore) is coming to an end and, what can I say, apart from being a week of questioning and uncertainties, it was a great week. As I am not starting my volunteering yet, I have lots of free time to visit the region and wander around across the local mountains.

During my first day here, I decided to pick up my hiking shoes and ride the bus to the famous Lake Louise. I was quite surprised when I arrived to see a frozen lake and people walking on it. In fact, it is still chilly here and windy, which explains why people are skiing even at this time of the year. Nonetheless, the experience was fascinating, I really cannot explain the feeling of looking up in the sky and not even be able to see the top of the mountain. It felt like I was part of a postcard.

On the ride to Lake Louise, I also met this girl from Saskatchewan named Amy, who was here for a few days on vacation. We chatted the whole ride and decided to spend the day together. We crossed the lake and did a small hike in the forest. Back in Banff, we then went to eat dinner at this Japanese Ramen Restaurant called Chaya. This small family-owned business is like a hidden gem of the city. They serve these recomforting and mouth-watering plates which will instantly make you feel better.

Wednesday, I went on a 30-minute hike on Tunnel Mountain near my hostel. There, I was able to get a great view of Banff and the valley.

Despite new Covid restrictions and places closing, I plan on making many more other outdoor adventures next week before going up skiing on the hill.
