Entry 3: Journey through the Smials?‍♀️

One of the main causes of the decline in ocean’s health is fishing and fishing-related pollution. This week, my volunteer mates and I cleaned up a coastline in the Auckland CBD over 50 metres. It was a warm sunny day, which motivated us to pick up an exorbitant amount of fishing gear. We sorted the litter afterward into different categories and it will be used as data for Sustainable Coastline’s website as evidence of the pollution harming the ocean.

Picking up litters around the CBD.
Building a fence for the sheep.

We also went further up north with the Sustainable Coastline van to plant trees and do some weeding around the Te Atatū peninsula. After a busy week, my volunteer team and I went to play mini golf and had the best laugh. I won second place?

During that same week, three of my hostel friends and I also visited Hobbiton! We booked a tour with Get Your Guide for 350 NZ, and looking back, I think we definitely got ripped off… oh well. Regardless, we had an amazing time: we woke up at 5 a.m., got there at 8 a.m., got free ginger beer at 11 a.m., and came back to the hostel at 2PM. It was an incredible feeling to wander around in this cinematic world. The rolling hills were gorgeous; it really felt like the middle of nowhere! To be honest with you readers, I had only watched the first Lord of the Rings before heading there, yet I really enjoyed my time there, which says a lot about the set! Next week I’m planning on trying food from different cultures and going to Rangitoto Island, a volcanic island in the Hauraki Gulf, to hike!

Entry 5: The Countdown Has Begun

Komdu blessað!  I can’t believe my journey in Iceland is already nearing its end. I started my week by stimulating my creativity while touring the LÁ Art Museum in Hveragerði with Joanne, a warm-hearted American, and Siyi, a wonderfully…
