Entry 4 – Football and Fashion: A Week in the Heart of Manchester

English

I had another fantastic week in Manchester, and I finally tried the tramways in the city, so my feet don’t have to hurt from walking anymore!

Last Tuesday, I went to the Etihad Stadium; home of the Manchester City team. It was gigantic and blue, contrasting well with the red from Old Trafford! The day was sunny and perfect for enjoying a sandwich in front of the stadium. It was also a lot less crowded than Old Trafford, and it was interesting to see the difference between the rival teams and experiencing the favouritism as I went to the two stadiums that day. I also bought surprises for my brothers!

On Thursday, I went shopping on Market Street, which is full of shops and restaurants! There were so many people that it was hard to see the names of the shops. I went into Primark, which is a mammoth store full of clothes, and bought jeans at a good deal! During my shopping spree, I also fell upon a Tim Hortons, which made me laugh as I didn’t expect to see a part of my country in Manchester. I might have to go for a doughnut soon!

On Saturday, I went to Affleck’s Palace; a famous attraction in Manchester. It’s a massive building filled with indie, grungy and alternative shops. The indoor market was extremely maze-like and had a punk vibe to it. It was like being sent straight to England’s punk movement in the 70’s. There were dark clothes, safety pins, posters, punk rock music and tattoo shops.

Next week, there’s another volunteer arriving! I plan to visit the neo-gothic John Rylands Library, and I might go to Edinburgh in Scotland for the weekend.

Cheerio!
